LOAD

GROUP PROJECT

To design a sustainable packaging alternative that utilises the Woolcool insulation to keep products cold in transit.

8 WEEKS

THE PROBLEM

Landfills are currently being inundated with packaging as many packaging materials cannot be recycled. This is causing large amounts of waste to pile up, taking centuries to break down. This has put a lot of pressure on the packaging industry to reduce the amount of packaging waste ending up in landfill. Therefore, sustainable packaging alternatives are being created to divert this issue.

There is a need to enhance current packaging products. The aim of this is to improve the sustainability of the design. This could be by reevaluating and adjusting the assembly and disassembly process. For this specific project, it could be to improve the woolcool liner configuration to ensure that the packagings lifecycle potential is achieved. Lastly, it could be to explore the use of packaging within the supply chain.

THE SOLUTION

To help reduce the impact of packaging on the environment, Load was created. Load can be both a shelf ready packaging alternative or can be shipped to your door. It attempts to improve the current packaging options to create a more sustainable alternative. The design uses sustainable materials and design process. It is a unique, eye-catching and luxury packaging alternative. It can also help businesses save money as the packaging has been designed to last.

These cartons can be custom branded to suit any product. It could also mean more branding exposure for Woolcool and Planet Protector as their liners can reach new markets. The cartons are easy to assemble and disassemble, making it easy for packing staff to fill and supermarket employees to fold and store for collection. The design of the carton also makes it simple for the insulation to be placed in easily.

SHELF READY

The shelf-ready packaging design was created so that the products could be sent to supermarkets on a large scale. The boxes would then be packed onto shelves or displayed.

TO YOUR DOOR

The products can also delivered directly to customers doors. They can also be sent out as gifts. Therefore, the design of the box was sleek and stylish to promote the brand and the products inside to create a unique and positive experience.

PROJECT REFLECTION

Working on a project that focussed on sustainability was a great experience. It was interesting to explore the importance of choosing materials that could have a lesser impact on the environment. This was the first project that focussed on packaging. Packaging is an important consideration and this project taught me that everything should be considered when designing products.
